BBC current affairs undercover team infiltrated a counterfeiting gang running a printing press in Manchester capable of producing a million pounds a day in phoney British and American currency – and involved in a crime that was said by the National Crime Squad to be so sophisticated that it could have seriously damaged entire national economies.

Utility Pays Workers in Funny Money -*- TOP
A large Primorye energy utility printed $1 million worth of its own money to make up for the lack of real rubles, an inspection discovered recently.
The use of the fake money also shows that there is still not enough cash in the country, even after more rubles were printed following the last year's economic crisis. Non-payments continue to plague the national economy.
Lutek used special coupons to pay not only its workers but contractors from 1996 until recently, said its Director Valter Kozlov.

U.S. started making paper money in 1861. They were called bank notes and they were printed on a cotton/linen paper. They were printed using green ink and had a fine-line design. Things changed in 1928 when each different denomination came with easily recognizable portraits and illustrations.
The next major changes occurred in 1990 when the currency was enhanced with two new features. Although the appearance of the bills was the same, there was a security thread embedded that runs vertically through the note and through the microprinting around the border of the portrait.

U.S. Treasury Issues New "Fake Money" -*- TOP
Take a look at a 20 dollar bill, or a hundred dollar bill. and you'll notice they don't look like the ones in the past. That's because both have undergone some changes.
The watermark is one of three features that help the Secret Service spot a fake bill. There's also a vertical thread on the left hand side of the bill that says "Twenty," "U.S.A.," and a copper symbol on the right-hand corner that changes color. Oops, Washington Post Fails to Renew Domain -*- TOP
The e-mail system for writers and editors at The Washington Post failed Thursday for hours because the newspaper did not renew its Internet address, the company said.
Network Solutions, which handles domain-name registration on the Internet, had sent the company a bill for washpost.com, the site that handles e-mail traffic for the Washington Post's reporters.
